Reader’s Question:

I’m 17 years old and I live in Elyria Ohio and recently got a speeding ticket. I just got my license about 3 weeks ago. Do you think my license will be suspended for my 1st violation?

Michelle

Elyria, OH

The state of Ohio does have special suspension rules for teenagers with probationary licenses or temporary permits. If you are under 18, the Registrar of Motor Vehicles will automatically suspend your probationary license for ninety days if you plead guilty or convicted to two moving violations. You may also be required to attend a state authorized juvenile driver improvement program.

Probationary license holders and temporary permit holders will be suspended for a year for accruing three moving violations before age 18. Probationary license holders and temporary permit holder may be suspended for six months if convicted of certain traffic-related offenses.

If you are convicted of certain alcohol-related violations such as DUI before age 18 your probationary license or temporary permit will be suspended for six months. You may contact the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) for more information regarding the OH graduated licensing program.
