Reader’s Question:

Does my 19 year old son needs to get car insurance if she will drive my automobile? We live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Sioux Falls, SD

Normally your son will be required to be listed on your car insurance policy if he lives in the same house so he will be properly insured. Auto insurance providers require that you list all licensed household members to the car insurance policy or you can exclude them to your policy. If you specifically exclude a driver in your car insurance policy, he will not get any coverage at all if they drive your vehicle.

I know if you add your teen to your car insurance policy it will greatly affect your car insurance rate since based on statistics young drivers have less experience when it comes to driver and is likely get involved in an accident. If your daughter just have a learners permit, you may contact your car insurance provider and see if they will require to add her to your policy or not.
